Maine is made up of a lot of small and medium sized businesses. Oftentimes, the person responsible for human resources is also the company owner, office manager, payroll coordinator, general manager, director of operations. . .you get the picture. While these individuals are great at doing their primary jobs, it's common for the human resources function to be an "add on." More and more business owners are recognizing the importance of having the person wearing multiple hats participate in human resources training.
I had the pleasure of presenting my newest program, Defensible Documentation: Documenting for the Employee Personnel File, at the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce this morning to a full house. During this 2 1/2 hour seminar, I presented essential documents, complete with templates, that are necessary inclusions in every employee's personnel file. By having an opportunity to present the "why we do this," "this law requires that documentation," and "really consider this before implementing a change in your practice" was a humbling experience for me. My motto is "let's keep this simple" and I think by the end of the program the participants had a greater understanding of what to do and how to do it.
